When I first began blogging almost 6 years ago. I didn’t have any contacts in PR or marketing. I have a customer service background and I’m familiar with working with sales. So I know the importance of creating working relationships with companies and not being afraid to make initial contact.

However, for the most part, it was trial and error and I had to start somewhere. So I began approaching companies to ask if I could request some of their products in order to review for my blog.

As time went on and the more content I created, I began to develop contacts in the industry. Which in turn I would be sent on press releases and invitations to attend events if a new product was coming to Ireland.

So how do you get the all-important invitation?

Introduce Yourself

It’s important to introduce yourself. If there is a particular brand you like and would like to collaborate get in contact with them. All they can say is no so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

A lot of brands are easy to get in touch with, either by their social media channels or website.

Don’t always expect freebies

We all love a free product, however, don’t let it cloud your judgement when reviewing products, or going to events. It’s easy to get carried away with all the cake pops and proseccos.

Only create content and accept samples of things you actually love or would genuinely like to try out.

Prepare

I’ve been to a lot of events over the years. Somewhere held in a more social setting like a trendy bar or store. While others were more formal in office environments and had interview style interactions.

So my advice is, be prepared to have as much knowledge on the brand or product as possible. Before you go have a list of questions ready on anything you want to know.

Give a shout out to your following to see if they have any questions. It’s so important to engage with your audience and keep them in the loop of what products and brands are hitting the shelves.

Be Social

It can be daunting attending events, especially when you’re new to blogging. Everyone is in the same position it’s like that sinking feeling we all had on our first day of school.

However like school, once you get there it’s never as scary as you think it’s going to be. Introduce yourself to other bloggers this is not only a great way to make friends with people that have similar interests. It’s also a great way to show brands you’re friendly, dedicated and easy to interact with.

Last by not least don’t forget to just be yourself.
